European Commission to announce decision on Ukraine's EU application on June 17 - spokesman

On Friday, June 17, the European Commission (EC) is to give its conclusions on the applications of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia for the status of candidate states for EU accession, said EC spokesman Eric Mamer.

"I saw in the press that supposedly the commission had already made a decision yesterday. This is completely false information. The commission decided absolutely nothing yesterday. It held an analytical debate, allowing the panel members to express their view of the situation. And all in order to prepare a decision that will be announced on Friday," the spokesman said Tuesday at a briefing in Brussels, UP writes.

"That is, the panel has prepared for this (final) debate, the (EC) services are finalizing the decision documents. On Thursday, there will be a meeting of cabinet directors (of the European Commissioners), which should confirm whether everything is in order with the panel's agenda for Friday, including, in particular, this item. And on Friday there will be a debate in the panel and the conclusion will be announced," Mamer explained.

He stressed that this is a normal procedure.

"Sometimes there is less time between the preliminary debate and the decision. It all depends on the circumstances. But there is nothing exceptional about working on this dossier in this context," the EC spokesman said.

Responding to questions, the spokesman declined to prejudge in any way a possible decision by the European Commissioners on Friday.

"Opinions will be offered on each of the three nominees," Mamer said.

After the EC opinion is issued, EU member states will have to consider whether the European Commission's arguments on the decision are convincing, the spokesman summarized.
