New Zealand tightens sanctions against people from Putin's entourage

The New Zealand government has expanded sanctions against the Russians, but cannot provide further military aid because it does not have anything Ukraine wants, the Australian Associated Press reports.

The Minister of Defense of the country, Peni Henare, said that New Zealand "is ready to provide additional lethal aid if Ukraine's needs match its reserves," the publication writes.

To date, New Zealand equipment sent to Ukraine reportedly includes 1,066 body armor, 473 helmets, 571 camouflage vests and belts.

On Tuesday, the country's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta announced that 19 new "members of Putin's inner circle" would be subject to financial and travel sanctions imposed as part of the coordinated global action.

"Ukraine has made it clear that the most important thing we can do to help them is our sanctions and support during the conflict, as we continue to do," she said.

New Zealand's sanctions currently apply to around 1,000 people.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand criticized the "failure" of the UN in the war in Ukraine.
