Shmygal about the situation with light and heat: the equator of winter has passed, but it is too early to relax

Russia tried to plunge Ukraine into darkness, but all its attempts failed. We are already halfway through winter, but we can't relax yet.

This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

"Last week, Ukraine crossed the "equator" of winter. From the beginning of the first massive missile attack on our energy system, we understood that this would be the most difficult winter in our history. So far, all attempts by Russia to plunge Ukraine into darkness have failed. We have passed the first half of winter with dignity. But relax it's very, very early. It's a work in progress," he said.

Shmyhal noted that we have enough resources to continue and complete the heating season in normal mode. Thus, about 11 billion cubic meters of gas are stored in gas storages, and almost 1.2 million tons of coal are stored in warehouses.

He noted that a decree was passed yesterday, which allowed the state company Naftogaz of Ukraine to attract a grant from the EBRD in the amount of almost 189 million euros. With these funds, the company will be able to import additional volumes of gas.

The Prime Minister added that the state of the power system remains difficult, but under control.

"Due to the last large-scale enemy shelling, we lost another part of electricity generation. The situation is complicated by the fact that a significant part of the generating capacities are located in temporarily occupied territories. Among them is the Zaporizhzhуa NPP, which Russian terrorists turned into a potential threat to the whole world," he said.

With this in mind, Ukraine must adhere to energy consumption limits and resort to emergency shutdowns in case of exceeding them.

As previously reported, electricity production in Ukraine increased slightly, but the capacity deficit remains significant.
