Kiev: Alexandr Hug, the representative of Switzerland, will be replaced by Mark Etherington from the United Kingdom as the first deputy chairman of the OSCE special international mission in Ukraine.
It was announced on Friday, September 28, in the press service of the OSCE.
"It is really so. The OSCE General Press Service confirmed this appointment", the organization said.
Mark Etherington, in addition to his experience in the OSCE as senior representative of the liaison mission, was the head of the group in Southern Sudan, and also on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom, led the group in the UK Government Stabilization Department in various field missions in different countries.
As reported, the term of office of the Deputy Chairman of the OSCE CMM in Ukraine, Alexander Hug, expires on October 31.
"The OSCE is not a career organization, it is possible to work in its structures for not more than ten years. I have reached this limit and therefore leave my post" he said.
He confirmed that as a result of the operations conducted by the mission, it was revealed that the parties to the conflict in the Donbass had completely failed to fulfill the earlier promises made in the framework of the Minsk agreements. But he admitted that OSCE still played a dissuasive role in the conflict.
The OSCE special monitoring mission in Ukraine began its work on March 21, 2014 on the basis of a request from the Ukrainian government to the OSCE and the consensus decision of all 57 member countries of the organization. SMM is an unarmed civil mission that operates in all regions of Ukraine. Its main tasks include monitoring and reporting on the situation in Ukraine, as well as facilitating a dialogue between all sides to the conflict.
As previously reported, the Head of the OSCE special monitoring mission in Ukraine in April 2014, the acting chairman of the OSCE, Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter was appointed Erturul Apakan from Turkey, who had many years of diplomatic career.
