Kiev: Great Britain supports the desire of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky to resolve the conflict in the Donbass and noted that elections in eastern Ukraine should be held with international observers and the media.
This was reported by the press service of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Ministry.
"The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has supported the signing by Ukraine and Russia of the" Steinmeier formula "as part of the settlement of the conflict in the Donbass", - the statement said.
UK Secretary of State for European and US Affairs Christopher Pincher called it an “encouraging move” and pointed to “President Zelensky’s clear favor in finding a diplomatic solution”.
He also emphasized that London supports the requirements of Kiev to comply with a number of conditions for local elections in eastern Ukraine.
“These include a comprehensive ceasefire, the withdrawal of foreign troops and unhindered access by international election observers and the media”, - Pincher emphasized.
“Now Russia has to play its role in ending the conflict, immediately ceasing to support the separatists and fulfilling its obligations under the Minsk agreements”, the British minister added.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Affair’s Minister Sergei Lavrov called the "Steinmeier formula" a compromise to the Minsk agreements.
