We should not make empty promises - Berbok on Ukraine's accession to the EU

The EU does not know when Ukraine will be able to join the EU because of Russia's military invasion. German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that the EU should not make empty promises regarding accession to the bloc. This was reported by Tagesschau.

"Ukraine belongs to the European home. However, we do not know when this step (Ukraine's accession to the EU) can be taken and how it can be taken, because they are now in a terrible war. Ukraine asked for quick accession to the EU after Russia attacked on February 24 and has already submitted documents that could form the basis of accession negotiations," the German foreign minister said.

She stressed that the EU accession procedure usually takes years.

"We must never make empty promises again. Therefore, the accession negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania, which have long been underway, should be opened before the end of this semester," Berbock added.
