Italian President Accepts Prime Minister's Resignation

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned as head of government for the second time.

This was reported by La Stampa.

Draghi made a short statement Thursday morning to members of the Chamber of Deputies, Italy's upper house of parliament.

"In light of yesterday's events in the Senate, please recess, I intend to go to the Quirinal Palace and inform them of my decisions," Draghi said.

He then went to meet President Sergio Mattarella, which lasted about half an hour.

The head of state's office said that Mattarella took note of Draghi's decision. The government remains in power to deal with current issues. Last week, Italy's president refused to accept Draghi's resignation.

Draghi's resignation will almost certainly pave the way for early elections in October.

Recall that Draghi's coalition government was on the verge of collapse after the Five Star Movement refused to vote for an important decree on financial aid to thousands of families and companies.
