Bulgaria is one of the largest indirect suppliers of weapons to Ukraine - media

Bulgaria has become one of the largest "indirect" suppliers of weapons to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war, selling a record number of weapons. This was reported by Euractiv.

According to the publication, to date, through intermediaries, Bulgaria has supplied Ukraine with weapons and ammunition worth at least 1 billion euros.

Euractiv notes that the country's arms enterprises produce ammunition for Soviet weapons and other products based on it, which are mostly of high quality and command higher prices on international markets.

The record export of weapons from Bulgaria is confirmed by Oleksandr Mykhaylov, the former executive director of the state-owned company Kintex, which is responsible for the export of weapons.

"When there is an international armed conflict, the use of defense products always increases," he said, recalling the military operations in Syria, Libya and Yemen, during which arms exports from the country also increased.

According to Mykhaylov, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine until today, the amount of weapons export permits amounted to more than 2 billion euros.

He also added that indirect arms exports to Ukraine are carried out through Poland and Romania.

"It is obvious that the volume of exports to Poland has increased significantly," Mykhailo said, adding that the Rzeszow airport in Poland, located approximately 70 km from the Ukrainian border, is a central logistics hub.

"It is not by chance that the USA installed Patriot air defense systems at this airport. During the first 120 days of the war in Ukraine, 60 cargo flights with weapons were made from Bulgarian airports to Rzeszów. The average carrying capacity is about 70-80 tons of cargo per plane," he noted.
