The EU's arms stockpiles were quickly depleted due to the war in Ukraine - Borrell

The military reserves of the European Union were quickly exhausted in the conditions of Russia's war against Ukraine. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on December 8 during the "Investments in European Defense 2022" conference.

According to Borrell, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was a "brutal awakening" for Europe. He noted that the EU lacks the capabilities necessary to protect against "threats of the highest level". Borrel said that there is a war going on in the east of Ukraine "like in the movies", and not some "low-intensity conflict or hybrid war".

The head of EU diplomacy emphasized that the EU's military industry has not received adequate funding for years, so military aid to Ukraine does not come from factory conveyors, but from army depots.

Borrell added that there is an opinion: "In order to stop the war, you need to stop supporting Ukraine."

"Of course! But how will it end? This is an important question. This war cannot end with the victory of Russia and the occupation of Ukraine... We must continue to support Ukraine," he said.

According to Borrell, Ukraine is fighting not only for itself, but also to protect common European values and security. He noted that the least the EU can do is to provide military aid.
