The U.S. is monitoring the situation with Saakashvili - ambassador

The U.S. expresses regret over the state of health of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili who remains on hunger strike and is actively monitoring the situation, U.S. Ambassador to Tbilisi Kelly Degnan said.

"We deplore Mikhail Saakashvili's state of health. When it comes to a person's health, monitoring by qualified professionals is very important. We are glad that there is a multidisciplinary team (doctors - IF) that monitors his health condition. We are also actively monitoring his condition," Degnan told reporters on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Saakashvili said on Wednesday that he had decided to refuse any medical assistance that would make the hunger strike easier. One of his lawyers, Dmitry Sadzaglishvili, informed journalists of the former president's decision. According to him, Saakashvili demands that he be allowed to exercise his procedural rights and that the visiting room be returned to its original appearance.
