For the first time Pope Francis has appointed a woman to a high position at the Vatican. This was reported by Reuters.
Sister Raffaella Petrini became secretary general of the governorship, the Vatican's second most important governing body.
The 52-year-old Petrini's new position is comparable to that of deputy governor of a state or deputy mayor of a city. The governorship, based in a large palace in the center of the Vatican, oversees more than 2,000 employees.
The appointment of Petrini, who holds a degree from a prestigious Italian business university, marks the pope's latest attempt to fulfill promises to improve gender balance made years ago.
The governorship oversees the day-to-day operations of the Vatican, including such departments as police, fire, health services, museums, maintenance and office staff.
Previously, the post of secretary general was held by a bishop.
