Iran fired 12 missiles at U.S. consulate in neighboring Iraq

On Sunday morning in the city of Erbil in northern Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan), explosions occurred in the area near the U.S. Consulate General, according to local authorities, due to a ballistic missile hit.

According to the counterterrorism unit of the authorities in the region, it was an attack from neighboring Iran.

The State Department also confirmed the attack, saying no casualties were reported. The consulate general's building is not in use at the moment, and no US citizens were there. It is also claimed that the shelling did not cause any damage to the consulate. The State Department condemned the attack.

Kurdistan24, a television station near the consulate, confirms the shelling and was forced to suspend broadcasting because of the destruction in the studio.

Authorities in the region claim 12 ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory. U.S. reports, do not specify the missiles. Erbil is located 100 kilometers from the border with Iran.

This is not the first time U.S. targets in Iraq have been fired from Iranian territory. In 2020, during a similar escalation, Iranian air defenses shot down a MAU airliner flying to Kiev.

As a reminder, Iran recently refused to negotiate further damages for the downed airliner.
