Germany allocates additional 2.4 billion euros for Ukrainian refugees

Germany is allocating an additional 2.4 billion euros this year to cover the financial costs of Ukrainian refugees in the country.

This was announced by Labor Minister Hubertus Heil.

Heil said some 800,000 people from Ukraine have already taken refuge in Germany, 30 percent of them under 14 years old.

Germany's labor bureau last month reported a rise in the number of unemployed as Ukrainian refugees register with the bureau in search of work.

Heil said about 360,000 Ukrainians are currently registered with the German welfare system, 260,000 of whom are looking for work.

"Now it's a question of giving them jobs," he added.

The U.N. refugee agency said Wednesday that more than 9 million people have crossed the border into Ukraine since Russia invaded.
