South Korea fired warning shots at a UAV that invaded North Korea

North Korean drones crossed the inter-Korean border on Monday. In response, Seoul deployed fighter jets, helicopters and other means to shoot them down. This is reported by the Yonhap agency.

According to a representative of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), at 10:25 a.m., the South's military detected several "unidentified objects," believed to be unmanned aerial vehicles, in the border areas of Gyeonggi Province.

The vehicles crossed the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas and were spotted in the Gimpo, Kanghwa and Paju islands, causing a temporary suspension of civilian flights.

The South issued warning messages, fired warning shots and launched fighter jets, attack helicopters and other warplanes, the official said.

"We have also identified them," a JCS representative told reporters on condition of anonymity. "The operation against the vehicles is still ongoing."

The military also deployed a KA-1 light attack aircraft, but it crashed for an unknown reason in Hanseong County, about 140 km east of Seoul, at 11:39 a.m. Both pilots survived.

The latest violation of the South's territorial airspace has reignited tensions on the peninsula after the North launched two short-range ballistic missiles on Friday and two medium-range ballistic missiles five days earlier.
