Germany almost repeated the record for arms exports in a year, more than a quarter was sent to Ukraine

In 2022, Germany exported weapons worth more than 8 billion euros, approaching the record year of 2021.

 This is reported by Spiegel.

The federal government has approved arms exports with a total value of 8.35 billion euros. The largest export was only in 2021 - by 9.35 billion euros.

At the request of one of the deputies from the Left, the Ministry of Economy was informed that more than a quarter of the weapons and military equipment exported from the beginning of the year to December 22 were sent to Ukraine.

Germany has approved the supply of arms to Ukraine with a total value of 2.24 billion euros. This includes, in particular, heavy weapons - 30 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, 14 Panzerhaubitzen 2000 gun mounts, five anti-aircraft guns, the advanced Iris-T anti-aircraft system. If we consider separately the weapons exported to third countries that are not members of the EU and NATO (totaling 3.23 billion euros), Ukraine received more than two-thirds of them.

Among NATO allies, the largest share of weapons was sold to the Netherlands (1.83 billion), the USA (about 864 million euros), Great Britain (453 million euros), Hungary (249 million euros), the top 10 buyers also include Australia, Singapore and South Korea .

When forming a coalition after the parliamentary elections – at the end of 2021, before a full-scale war – the SPD, the Greens and the Free Democrats initially planned to reduce arms exports. As you know, subsequent events prompted Berlin to make a radical U-turn and abandon the principle of not supplying weapons to warring countries.
