ISW: Western battle tanks will help Ukraine wage mechanized warfare

Analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) note that modern battle tanks, which will be provided by NATO countries, will help Ukraine conduct a successful mechanized war against the Russian Federation.

The ISW listed media reports about the plans of Western countries to send military equipment to Ukraine:

 · The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Joe Biden is preparing to send a "significant number" of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine.

German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to supply Ukraine with at least one tank company (14 tanks) of Leopard 2 tanks.

 · Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said that his country has officially asked Germany to grant permission for the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok said that Berlin will not interfere if Poland wants to send its tanks to Ukraine.

 · British officials have confirmed that the United Kingdom will send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron does not rule out that his country will send Leclerc tanks to Ukraine.

ISW analysts say that the provision of battle tanks by Western countries to Ukraine will help it wage a mechanized war to defeat Russian forces and liberate Ukrainian territories. The ISW recalled the statement of the Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny, who said in December that Ukraine needed 300 tanks to carry out counteroffensive operations.
