The situation is "fragile": term of use of nuclear fuel at ZNPP is coming to an end, - Grossi

The term of use of nuclear fuel at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is coming to an end. The situation there is "fragile". Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Herman Galushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, said this at a briefing, Radio Liberty reports.

"I would describe the situation at the plant as a 'delicate balance,' meaning it is very fragile," Grossi said.

He clarified that one of the main problems is the expiration of the nuclear fuel in the reactors, as well as the reduction of the station's staff.

According to the IAEA Director General, he will negotiate with Russia to assess the condition of the fuel during his trip to Moscow.

In turn, Galushchenko clarified that he had discussed the problems at the plant during talks with Grossi.

"There is a question: the service life (of the fuel - ed.), this period has expired, then the manufacturer must say whether it is possible to operate outside the limits... This is a complicated issue. If it is not possible, it is necessary to take actions to unload this fuel, it must be qualified personnel, and then the issue of storage of this fuel. These are important issues of European security," added Galushchenko.
