Ukraine reports destruction of Russian Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter in Crimea (UPDATED)

Defense forces in Crimea have destroyed a Russian Ka-27 naval anti-submarine helicopter. This was reported on Facebook by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy Dmytro Pletenchuk.


"Minus the Russian Ka-27 in Crimea. It was looking for something. Found," he wrote.

 

The Ka-27/28 shipboard anti-submarine helicopter is designed to solve the tasks of anti-submarine defense of the fleet based on ships of various classes. It is capable of detecting modern submarines and surface targets, transmitting data about them to shipboard and shore stations, and attacking them with onboard weapons.

A Russian naval anti-submarine helicopter Ka-27 exploded in midair, but the reasons for this, as well as the fate of the crew, are not yet known.


"From the available information, we can say that this machine exploded in the air. The causes have not yet been established. I am not yet ready to provide verified information on this matter. The search operation is ongoing. Other helicopters were involved. The Raptor boat was also involved. There is also no information about the fate of the crew," Pletenchuk said.

 

According to Pletenchuk, the incident occurred at dawn, and the search operation was still ongoing in the morning.
