Georgian Ministry of Justice fined for publishing a video of Saakashvili in prison

After examining a video of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili being taken to a prison hospital, the State Inspectorate Service of Georgia has initiated a check on compliance with the law when publishing such footage.

 

Based on the results of the inspection, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia was found to be in violation of the law "On the Protection of Personal Data". The video shows Saakashvili eating at the Rustavi prison and being transported to the prison medical facility.

 

"The State Inspector's Office has completed an investigation into the legality of extraction and distribution of Mikhail Saakashvili's personal data by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia and the Special Penitentiary Service. According to the decision of the state inspector, the Ministry of Justice and the Special Penitentiary Service have been held administratively liable for several episodes of the offense," the State Inspector's Service of Georgia reports.

 

According to the agency, the amount of the fine imposed was 2.5 thousand GEL (about $810).
