U.S. President Joe Biden said this week that the U.S. will play a more direct role in a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict in particular. This, however, could be a challenge for the U.S. leader. Biden, in particular, will have to settle the issue of Ukraine's desire to join NATO, the AP wrote, citing its own sources, UNN reported.

"Biden will have to settle the issue of Ukraine's desire to join NATO. The U.S. and NATO reject Putin's demands for guarantees that Ukraine will never become a member of the Western military alliance. But senior State Department officials have told Ukraine that NATO membership is unlikely to be approved in the next decade," the AP wrote, citing a source.

Also, according to the agency, Biden administration officials suggest that the U.S. "will push Ukraine to formally cede some autonomy to eastern Ukrainian lands" that are now controlled by Russian fighters.

"For Biden, the challenge will be to encourage Kiev to accept some facts on the ground in eastern Ukraine without showing concession to Putin, which could embolden the Russian leader and spark a new wave of condemnation from Republicans at a time when Biden's popularity is already falling," the AP writes.

At the same time, according to one source, Ukraine is ready to participate in the negotiations on the definition of "special status".

But Ukraine will reject any changes that would give the region a veto over national policy, the source told AP.

As a reminder, earlier this week there was an online meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States. The main topic of the talks was Ukraine and Russia's military build-up near its borders.
