Saakashvili was moved to jail against his will from hospital, - ombudsman

The ill Mikheil Saakashvili was transferred from a military hospital to a prison in Rustavi tonight. This happened against his will. This was reported by ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova on Facebook.

"The cynicism of how this was done is astounding. Sick Mikheil against his will was taken out at night without warning to his lawyers," she wrote.

According to the ombudsman, Saakashvili's condition is critical and worrisome.

"After three hypertensive crises, he feels extremely difficult, for several days before that he did not get out of bed. In the full extent of the necessary medical care he was never provided and a new doctor was not appointed, and the decision on the strategy of treatment was made by doctors of different profiles", - said Denisova.

She says that transporting Saakashvili back to prison in this condition is a violation of Article 22 of Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, whose provisions oblige prisoners who are sick and in need of specialist care to be transferred to specialized institutions or to civil hospitals.

"I consider such actions of the Georgian authorities as torture and a way of depriving citizen of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvili of his right to life, which is a violation of Articles 6, 7, 9, 14, 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Georgia in 2002," Denisova said.
