President of Georgia pardons 15 prisoners on anniversary of April 9 tragedy

President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili has pardoned 15 prisoners on the 33rd anniversary of the April 9 tragedy.

 

The pardoned prisoners, including seven women and six citizens of Ukraine, will leave the penitentiary institutions today, the presidential administration confirmed.

 

Recall that today Georgia celebrates National Unity Day.

 

On April 9, 1989, the Soviet Army suppressed a peaceful demonstration in support of independence in Tbilisi, killing 21 protesters.

 

Two years later, Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union.

 

April 9 is a state holiday in Georgia.
