Hungary says it has found a way to pay for Russian gas without violating EU sanctions

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that the government intends to pay for Russian gas in rubles. At the same time he stressed that Hungary will not violate the EU sanctions. It is reported by Index.

According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, the contractual relationship between the subsidiary MVM CEEnergy and Gazprom subsidiary "Gazpromexport," as well as technical negotiations over the past few days allow paying for gas as required by the supplier, without violating the sanctions in Brussels.

He stressed that in practice this will mean that the government will open two accounts at "Gazprombank" - one in euros, the other in rubles. The Hungarian government pays the bank in euros, and the bank converts the euros into rubles, which are then sent to Gazpromexport.
