Zelenskyy provided Blinken and Austin with a plan for tougher sanctions against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conveyed to United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin an action plan for tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation. Zelensky stated this during the address.

"Aid to Ukraine was the number one issue in negotiations with representatives of the United States who arrived in Kyiv yesterday - Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin," Zelensky said.

Zelensky said the talks lasted more than three hours and were substantive, encouraging and productive.

"We agreed with the American side on further steps to strengthen the AFU, to meet all the priority needs of our army, including preparations for the big ministerial meeting on Tuesday, where 40 defense ministers of partner states will gather," Zelensky said.

He also stressed that the key issue is protecting Ukraine and freedom in eastern Europe.

"Discussed ways to strengthen sanctions, the fact that Russia is not looking for peace indicates that more sanctions pressure is needed. That's why we handed our partners a special plan to strengthen sanctions against Russia, which was developed by an international expert group led by Ermak and McFaul," he said.

On 24 April, the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, said that he had approached former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul on behalf of Volodymyr Zelenskyy to create a special program to develop and strengthen sanctions against Russia.
