Among the newly created cities - Milton Keynes in England, Dunfermlin in Scotland, Bangor in Northern Ireland, Wrexham in Wales, also a few settlements in overseas territories.

 

Applicants for the title of city had to demonstrate their cultural heritage during the past year.

 

The last competition for the right to be called a city was held ten years ago to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The expansion of the British city family has increased the number of cities on the British mainland to 76, with 55 in England, eight in Scotland, seven in Wales and six in Northern Ireland.

 

Also, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II attended the Royal Horse Show at Windsor, amidst the start of her platinum jubilee celebrations.
