China will take strict measures in case of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan - Chinese Foreign Ministry

China will take strong measures if U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that if Pelosi continues on the 'wrong path,' China will take 'tough and decisive measures' to protect its sovereignty," Bloomberg reported.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also noted that China and the United States are in contact in both Beijing and Washington, and China has repeatedly told the U.S. side that it opposes Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. Hua Chunying expressed hope that U.S. authorities are aware of the importance and sensitivity of the issue and how dangerous it can be.

According to Hua Chunying, it is the U.S. that is responsible for the provocations that have led to increased tensions in the Taiwan Strait. She said it was hard to imagine anything "more reckless and provocative" than such U.S. behavior toward Taiwan.

Chief of Staff Wang Yi later said that if Pelosi visited Taiwan, U.S. credibility would be undermined internationally.

"The principle of 'One China' is the consensus in the international community and the basis of China's political relations with other countries," said the minister, who was quoted by Western media.

The head of Chinese diplomacy pointed out that "a few people in the United States are challenging China's sovereignty on the issue of Taiwan," which "will never be accepted by the Chinese people and the international community." He reiterated that Beijing perceived this as "playing with fire."
