China imposes sanctions on Pelosi over visit to Taiwan

China announced that it was imposing sanctions against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her immediate family because of her visit to Taiwan, reports the BBC.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Pelosi "seriously interfered in China's internal affairs, seriously damaged China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously violated the principle of one China and seriously threatened the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

China is conducting the second day of its largest military exercises around Taiwan. Taiwan's Defense Ministry reports that several Chinese ships and aircraft are now in their second day of crossing the middle line, the informal dividing line in the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan.

The Chinese military exercises came after a controversial visit to the island by U.S. Democrat-in-chief Nancy Pelosi.

Speaking in Japan, Pelosi promised that China "will not isolate" Taiwan by preventing American politicians from traveling there.
