Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin has died

Former Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin, who ruled the country from the late 1980s to the new millennium, has died at the age of 96, Xinhua reported.

 

 "Jiang Zemin died of leukemia and multiple organ failure in Shanghai at 12:13 on November 30, 2022 at the age of 96, it was announced on Wednesday," Xinhua reported.

 

 Jiang came to power after the Tiananmen Square crackdown, AFP notes. Jiang replaced Deng Xiaoping in 1989 and led China as it emerged as a world power.
