The Pentagon has spotted another Chinese spy balloon

The Pentagon said in a statement to CNN on Friday night that a second Chinese spy balloon had flown over Latin America, as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken postponed his trip to China.

“We are receiving reports of a balloon flying over Latin America. We now assess that this is another Chinese reconnaissance balloon," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a statement to CNN.

It was unclear exactly where the balloon was over Latin America, but a US official told CNN that it did not appear to be heading for the United States at this time.

Officials are still tracking a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the United States. The Pentagon said it was not a threat at this time and was expected to remain over the US for the next few days.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken postponed his trip to China this weekend over the incident, which he called a "clear violation of our sovereignty", but said lines of communication would remain open to resolve the issue. He said he plans to visit China "when conditions permit."

As the BBC writes, Beijing called for a solution to the dispute "with a cool head." China has expressed regret over the balloon over the US, saying it was a meteorological airship that had gone astray.

Blinken would be the first US secretary of state to visit China since October 2018, signaling a thaw after a period of friction under former President Donald Trump.

Blinken said last month that he would use the trip to help establish "safeguards" to prevent the relationship from escalating into all-out conflict.
