The trial of the ex-president of Kosovo, who is accused of war crimes, began in The Hague

The Special Court for Kosovo in The Hague on Monday began the trial of the unrecognized state's former president, Hashim Thaci, 54, on charges of war crimes during the 1998-99 war with Serbia.

 This is reported by Reuters.

Thaci and three of his closest associates have been indicted on 10 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including persecution, murder, torture and enforced disappearance during the uprising.

Among other things, they are accused of participating in a joint criminal group that carried out large-scale and systematic attacks on the Serbian minority in Kosovo, as well as on Kosovo Albanians. Neither pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

Hashim Thaci is a former political commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, which participated in the war against Serbia. After the end of hostilities, Thaci entered politics and served as prime minister from 2008 and as president of Kosovo from 2016.

The Special Court for Kosovo considers Thaci responsible for nearly 100 murders of civilians during the 1998-1999 war. After the charges were announced in November 2020, he resigned and voluntarily surrendered to the court.

On the eve of the trial, billboards appeared in Kosovo with photos of Thaci and ex-speaker of the parliament Kadri Veseli with the inscription "Heroes of war and peace". And veterans of the war in Kosovo and other Kosovar nationalist groups announced a protest action in support of the defendants on Sunday.

The Special Court for Kosovo, based in the Netherlands and staffed by international judges and lawyers, was established in 2015 to hear cases under Kosovo law against former KLA fighters.

Many Kosovo Albanians believe that the tribunal is biased against the Kosovo Liberation Army and is interested in tarnishing its reputation.
