South Africa supplied ammunition to Russia using a ship that docked at the Simonstown naval base in Cape Town last December.
This was stated by the US ambassador to South Africa, Ruben Brigeti, whose words are quoted by News24.
"The US is convinced that South Africa, despite the fact that it declares its neutral position regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supplied weapons to the army of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin," the statement reads.
According to him, the US recorded the parking of a cargo ship at the Simonstown naval base in the period from December 6 to 8, 2022. In Washington, they are sure that representatives of South Africa loaded weapons and ammunition onto this ship, which then left for the Russian Federation.
Brighetti told reporters that the US government took the issue seriously. He added that the armament of the Russians is a serious problem and the USA does not believe that this issue is closed.
Brighetti said that he was ready to bet his life on how accurate the US intelligence data is that South Africa supplied ammunition to Russia.
The Lady R's visit to the naval base in December sparked speculation and fear. At the time, Brighetti said he had formally written to Defense Minister Tanda Modise.
He added that other concerns raised by US officials to South African delegations included the country's participation in military exercises with Russia and China on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
We will remind you that RBC-Ukraine reported that the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. In this regard, Pretoria, where the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit will be held in August, should arrest him upon arrival.
As reported, South Africa asked Vladimir Putin not to come to the BRICS summit, but to participate via Zoom.
