Zelenskyi met with a representative of the Vatican: they discussed the Ukrainian peace formula

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyі met with the special representative of Pope Francis Cardinal Matteo Zuppi in Kyiv. In particular, they discussed the Ukrainian peace formula.

This is reported by the Office of the President.

The parties discussed the situation in Ukraine and the humanitarian interaction between our state and the Holy See within the framework of the implementation of the Ukrainian peace formula.

The President noted that the Russians continue to commit terrible war crimes against Ukraine, the latest of which was the blowing up of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. He emphasized that this crime carries huge threats and will have dire consequences for people's lives and the environment.

Zelenskyі noted that the ceasefire and freezing of the conflict will not lead to the establishment of peace. Thus, the occupiers can only take advantage of the pause for capacity building and further offensive, for a new wave of crimes and terror. Therefore, the Russian Federation should withdraw all its troops from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

The President and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi discussed in detail the implementation of the Ukrainian peace formula and the need to involve the widest possible range of countries, particularly the Global South, in the Global Peace Summit.

Zelenskyі called on the Holy See to contribute to the implementation of the Ukrainian peace plan.

He noted that the Holy See could also make an effective contribution to the release of Ukrainian prisoners, the return of deported children, and the restoration of justice.

For his part, the cardinal expressed the solidarity of Pope Francis with the Ukrainian people and assured the readiness of the Holy See to join the search for ways to implement the mentioned humanitarian initiatives.

Matteo Zuppi also handed Zelenskyі a letter from Pope Francis.

Note that after the start of the full-scale war, Pope Francis took an ambiguous position. He tried to present himself as a peacemaker and called for peace, while saying nothing about Russia's guilt.

In April, Pope Francis said the Vatican was participating in a peacekeeping mission to try to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, the Office of the President stated that Ukraine does not know anything about the Vatican's peacekeeping mission and the authorities did not agree to such initiatives.

In May, Zelenskyi met with Francis and said that Ukraine does not need mediators in the war. Instead, an action plan for a just peace in Ukraine should be developed.

After that, Pope Francis instructed Dzuppi to conduct a peacekeeping mission "to try to help end the war in Ukraine."
