At the briefing, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized that the United States attaches high importance to Ukraine's actions in the fight against corruption and continues to consider it a priority.
"We have been very clear and direct with our Ukrainian colleagues on this issue. We did this before the full-scale Russian invasion, when we were working with Ukraine to encourage them to root out corruption and talked about best practices that they could rely on to fight corruption. That conversation continued recently during the Secretary's visit, where we discussed these issues directly with President Zelensky and other officials," Miller said.
Miller also emphasized that the United States supports the steps Ukraine is taking to fight corruption and believes that these efforts are primarily for the benefit of Ukraine. He emphasized that these actions are necessary to gain support from Western allies, as well as to realize Ukraine's European ambitions, including membership in the European Union.
The State Department representative added that a strong economy will help Ukraine build a strong defense component, which is important to protect the country from possible aggressive actions by Russia.
However, Miller did not comment on whether US support is linked to specific anti-corruption measures in Ukraine.
