Ukraine's accession to the European Union will be a challenge for European agriculture, including Polish agriculture. This was stated on Monday in Brussels by Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus, PAP reports.
He said that he had met with the ministers of agriculture of the Visegrad Four countries and the coalition of five neighboring countries of Ukraine. These talks concerned, in particular, Ukraine's possible accession to the EU.
"These are challenges for EU agriculture. But first of all, for us - I mean Poland and the neighboring countries. We need to talk about this now. We need to look for solutions so that this does not harm European agriculture; so that Ukraine's accession to the EU does not harm our farmers - Polish and from other border countries. We agree - both groups - that these issues are important and that we have to think about them," said the Polish Minister of Agriculture.
The ministers also discussed the transit of Ukrainian grain through the EU.
"We talked about the grain that passes through our countries. Our decisions - Polish, Hungarian, Slovak - on the unilateral ban show that transit can take place. This transit is growing. This grain does not stay in our countries and this is a good decision," Telus said.
According to him, more and more other EU countries are recognizing Poland's rightness behind the scenes.
He also expressed hope that the EU will draw conclusions from this and create a system at its level that will ensure that Ukrainian goods get to where they were going before the war.
