India leads the G20: Biden and Xi Jinping will miss the summit, while Putin will take part in an online event

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a virtual summit of G20 leaders on Wednesday, November 22. Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden will miss the meeting, while Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the online event. This is reported by Bloomberg.

This online meeting follows a virtual summit of leaders of emerging economies, which was attended by Xi, but skipped by Modi. The summit discussed conflicts, including the confrontation between Israel and Hamas.

Today's event comes at the end of India's G20 presidency, where the country has been demonstrating its influence. By using the one-year presidency, Modi is seeking to emphasize India's global influence ahead of the 2024 national elections.

Indian Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra emphasized that most G20 leaders will participate in the video meeting. While US President Joe Biden is skipping the summit, the Kremlin has confirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin's participation.

India hopes to review the progress made during its presidency, when it prioritized support for emerging economies as a key agenda item.

The group also worked out compromise wording on Russia's invasion of Ukraine during a leaders' summit in September. Since then, however, the war between Israel and Hamas has exacerbated the divide between the developed world and the Global South.
