Orban's party prevents the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party has submitted a resolution to parliament calling for a vote against the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, Reuters reports.

The document says that the EU enlargement policy should be "an objective process based on rules and results."

"The European Union's enlargement policy should remain an objective process based on rules and results. The start of membership negotiations with Ukraine should be based on consensus among the EU member states... There are no conditions for this today," the authors of the resolution explain.

The report also says that EU leaders should first "conduct a thorough assessment of how Ukraine's possible membership would affect cohesion and agricultural policy within the European Union, which benefits poorer EU countries, including Hungary."
