Finland is preparing to open the border with Russia

The Finnish Border Guard is preparing to open checkpoints on the eastern border with Russia on December 14. Heikki Ahtiainen, Deputy Commander of the Border Guard of Southeastern Finland, told Yle in a commentary.

"It takes several hours to dismantle the barriers on the border. It will not take long to resume traffic," Ahtiainen said.

According to him, the border guards will not remove all the fences at once, as at some point the checkpoints will have to be closed again.

"We have to see if it will continue (the flow of asylum seekers - ed.) if the borders are opened," the border guard said.

At the same time, Ahtiainen said that the Border Guard Service is ready to extend restrictions on the eastern border.
