Brazil has announced that it is deploying troops along the border with Venezuela after the Venezuelan government announced plans to annex the Guyana-controlled region of Essequibo into its territory. This is reported by the BBC.


The day before, Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro asked the state oil company to issue licenses for oil production in the oil-rich Essequibo region and proposed that the National Assembly pass a bill to make this territory part of Venezuela.


These measures are causing concern throughout the region. Guyana's troops are on high alert, and the Brazilian army has said it is deploying more troops to the border city of Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima state.


The publication adds that due to the difficult terrain, Venezuelan soldiers will have to pass through Brazilian territory to enter Essequibo.


It was reported that the Brazilian army has announced an increase in its presence in the region as part of efforts to "guarantee the inviolability of the territory."
