Finland will open two checkpoints on the border with Russia

The Finnish government has decided to open two checkpoints on the border with Russia. The entire border has been closed since the end of November. This was stated by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in the Yle publication.

According to the head of government, Finland will open the Vaalima and Niirala checkpoints.

The decision was made unanimously, but the Prime Minister reminded that the government is ready to quickly resume the closure if there are problems with refugees after the border is opened.

Finnish Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen clarified that this decision will be valid until January 14, 2024.

Mikko Lehmus, a representative of the Border Guard Service, emphasized that the opening of these checkpoints is aimed at facilitating the possibility of visiting relatives for people living on both sides of the border.

As a reminder, the decision to completely close the border expires on Wednesday night (December 13-14).
