The European Union's chief of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump over his statements about NATO. During a speech at a political rally in South Carolina, Trump said that the United States may refuse to defend NATO allies who do not allocate enough funds for defense, Sky News reports.

"Let me be sarcastic. We're going to see and hear a lot of things during this campaign. Let's be serious: NATO cannot be an 'a la carte' defense alliance, it cannot be an alliance that depends on the mood of the US president," said Josep Borrell, emphasizing that NATO's principles and commitments should not be subject to "whims" or changes in the political environment.

Trump's statements also caused dissatisfaction in the White House, where they were described as "horrific and crazy." High-ranking Western officials have also expressed criticism of the former president.

US President Joe Biden called Trump a "useful accomplice" of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that such statements could harm NATO's unity and strength in ensuring the security of the entire alliance.
