Sweden to become NATO member today - White House (UPDATED)

The White House has announced that today, March 7, Sweden will officially join the North Atlantic Alliance and become its 32nd member. This is stated on the White House website.

The White House said that Sweden is a strong democracy with a highly capable army and that the country's presence in NATO will make the United States and other allies even safer.

"NATO is the most powerful defense alliance in the history of the world, and it is as important today to the security of our citizens as it was 75 years ago when our Alliance was founded on the ruins of World War II," the White House summarized.

As a reminder, Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership immediately after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
