Fire on a unique icebreaker in Vladivostok, Russia: one dead and injured

In Vladivostok, Russia, a fire broke out on the multifunctional ice-class supply ship Ekaterina Velikaya, killing one person and injuring three others. This was reported by the Russian publication RIA Novosti.

 

"Today at around 3 a.m., a fire broke out at the Dalzavod Ship Repair Center in Primorye on the multifunctional supply vessel Ekaterina Velikaya. The fire has been extinguished. According to preliminary data, 3 people are in the hospital, 1 person died," the statement said.

 

According to the Emergency Situations Ministry in Primorsky Krai, when the firefighters arrived, there was smoke coming from the stern of the ship and smoke in the holds. The rescuers rescued five people, three of whom were injured due to "exposure to dangerous fire factors."

 

The fire reportedly damaged a technological premises over an area of about 50 square meters. The cause of the fire and damages are under investigation.

 

The first multifunctional supply vessel of the reinforced ice class, Ekaterina Velikaya, was called a "unique vessel" and a "mega icebreaker". It was launched at the Zvezda shipyard in 2020. The ship is reported to be able to traverse Arctic ice up to 1.5 meters thick.
