New attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure: blackouts and restrictions

On the night of April 10, Russia attacked Ukraine's energy infrastructure again. As of 10:30 a.m., emergency blackouts were introduced in Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. In addition, restrictions are still in place in Kharkiv region, but according to new schedules. There are restrictions for industry in Kryvyi Rih district.

"Russian UAVs and missiles attacked power facilities in the southern region. Equipment at one of Ukrenergo's substations was damaged. Consumers in Kherson and Mykolaiv regions were cut off from electricity supply. The power supply was restored by 8:00 a.m., but during the next air raid, blackouts began again," Ukrenergo said.

As the Ministry of Energy clarified , the shelling also damaged a generation facility in Odesa region. In this case, there were no power outages.

In general, according to the Ministry of Energy, Ukraine's power system is stable and balanced. For the current day, electricity imports are expected to reach 400 MW. Some exports are also expected.

"Due to the Russian attack on the critical infrastructure of the south of the country, power supply was cut off in the Kherson region. Power engineers are carrying out emergency repair work," said Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson RMA.

According to him, as of 12 o'clock, the power supply was restored. In this regard, Prokudin urged people not to turn on all electrical appliances at once after the power is turned on, as this could damage the power system.

According to Mykolaivoblenergo, emergency power outages were introduced as early as 6 am. At first, the first stage consumers were cut off, but by 7 a.m. the second stage had to be added. However, after 11 a.m., the region's power grid faced serious problems.

"We have a large-scale emergency outage. Where there is no light, it is not according to the hourly schedule," the regional power company said.

At the same time, the power company is asking residents of the region to save electricity to avoid repeated blackouts. This is especially true for those who have just had their electricity turned back on.

On April 10, Kharkiv will impose restrictions on electricity consumption for industry. In addition, the operation of electric transport is restricted. Kharkiv and the region have also updated their hourly power outage schedules. The new schedule will be in effect from April 10 to 14. It is expected that electricity will be cut off for 7 hours a day.

However, this does not mean that the power will not be cut off at other times, Kharkivoblenergo explained. Power engineers noted that the power grid of Kharkiv region operates in extreme conditions, and it is often impossible to adhere to the schedules of planned outages.

Kharkiv residents say on social media that the power is cut off for 11-16 hours every day. The reason for this is the continuing shelling and existing damage to the power grid. All of this forces the power company to carry out outages in excess of hourly schedules.
