Russia has begun to withdraw its peacekeepers from the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which was taken under full control by Azerbaijan last autumn. This was reported by local media.
The first group and military equipment of the peacekeeping contingent left the territory of the Khutavank temple in the Kalbajar district. The Azerbaijani police went there.
"Thus, the process of withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping contingent from the territory of Azerbaijan has begun," the local publication said.
The withdrawal of Russians from the base in Khojaly is also underway.
"It is expected that the historic and large process will be completed in a few days. With this, Azerbaijan regains full sovereign control over Karabakh and all its lands," the publication writes.
In addition, the withdrawal of the contingent was confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
