The court in Georgia refused to release Saakashvili on health grounds

The judge of the Tbilisi City Court refused to satisfy the lawyers' request for a postponement of the punishment and release of Mykhailo Saakashvili due to the state of health of "News of Georgia".

According to "Georgia Online", this decision was announced by judge Heorhiy Arevadze. Thus, Arevadze did not satisfy the request of Saakashvili's lawyers.

The judge's decision caused dissatisfaction among relatives and supporters of the former president.

At today's hearing, the parties made their closing arguments, after which the judge announced his decision.

The representatives of the penitentiary service did not agree with the request of Saakashvili's lawyers and, as lawyer Nika Abramishvili stated, the request should not be granted.

According to Abramishvili, the conclusion submitted to the court did not contain reliable information about the severity of the illness of the convicted Mykhailo Saakashvili and could not serve as a basis for delaying the serving of the sentence.

For their part, the lawyers today called on the judge to grant their request and make a just decision. Shalva Khachapuridze reminded Giorgi Arevadze that saving the life of the third president was in the hands of the judge.

According to the lawyers, the judge's decision could play a historic role and lay the foundation for a great reconciliation.

Due to his health condition, Mykhailo Saakashvili was not present at the meeting or at the announcement of the decision either remotely.

For reference, Saakashvili's lawyers appealed to the court with a request for a postponement or exemption from the punishment of the former president of Georgia. Judge Georgy Arevadze has been considering this petition for about two months.

Saakashvili, who lived and worked in Ukraine after the end of his presidential term in Georgia, secretly returned to Georgia shortly before the first round of municipal elections in the fall of 2021, after which he was detained and imprisoned.

The politician's health deteriorated significantly after two hunger strikes. Saakashvili has been under guard at the Vivamed Tbilisi clinic since May.
