On March 29-30, the "For Democracy" summit began its work. This is a project initiated by US President Joe Biden. It is aimed at "renewing democracy inside the country and confronting autocracy abroad."

 Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko told about it.

 What is the purpose of the "For Democracy" summit

 He reminded that the first such summit took place in December 2021. "The task of this global project is to coordinate the actions of various democratic forces to protect and promote democratic values ​​and standards. The participants of the summit should make proposals that will be implemented by various international organizations and individual states, including the United States," Fesenko noted.

 According to Deputy Head of the US State Department Vedant Patel, the main topic of discussion during the current summit will be the need to end the war in Ukraine and restore the world order. In addition, according to the speaker, the participants of the summit will discuss other topics regarding the future of democracy both in the United States and in a global context.

 "It is logical and indicative that the topic of the war between Russia and Ukraine will be one of the main topics at the second "For Democracy" summit. It is obvious that Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, independence and territorial integrity, but also for the ideals of democracy and the principles of international law, which Russia despises. It is on the battlefields of war in Ukraine that the frontline of the global struggle between democracy and authoritarianism is now taking place," Fesenko said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced Ukraine's participation in this summit.

 What is important for Ukraine "Summit for Democracy"

 Fesenko believes that the summit is important primarily for promoting Ukrainian interests in the context of protecting democracy. "It is necessary to discuss not just the end of the war in Ukraine, but the provision of conditions for Ukraine's victory in the war against Russian aggression. In order to strengthen the positions of global democracy, it is precisely the indisputable victory of democratic Ukraine over authoritarian Russia that is needed. This will allow to revive and strengthen democratic processes in the post-Soviet space, and possibly on a wider international scale. And in order to strengthen and consolidate the positions of democracy in Ukraine, it is also important to ensure the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the EU and NATO," he said.

 Regarding the restoration of world order, Fesenko noted two problems:

 First, it is necessary to resuscitate and reform international organizations that ensure international order, such as the UN and the OSCE. And for this, it is necessary to change the status and role of Russia in these organizations, in particular, to deprive Russia of the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

 Secondly, reformation requires a decision-making procedure in the EU and NATO. In these organizations, there is a seemingly absolutely democratic principle of decision-making by consensus (that is, unanimously). However, as practice shows, such a decision-making procedure can block the normal work of the EU and NATO, and promote the interests of individual states that themselves violate the principles and standards of democracy (as in the case of the Orban regime). Therefore, in the EU and NATO, it is necessary to switch to the procedure of decision-making by a qualified majority. I hope that at the second "For Democracy" summit, these problems will not just become a subject of discussion, but specific actions will be proposed to solve them.
