Ukraine initiates the convening of the UN Security Council due to the undermining of the Kakhovska HPP and calls on the G7 and the EU for new sanctions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued a statement regarding Russia's terrorist act at the Kakhovskaya HPP and initiates a series of measures, in particular, the convening by Ukraine of an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, and also calls on the countries of the "Group of Seven" and the EU to consider the issue of new far-reaching sanctions against the Russian Federation, in particular on the Russian rocket industry and nuclear industry.

"We call on the international community to strongly condemn the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovskaya HPP.

The man-made crime of the Russian Federation confirms the high relevance of the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi. We call on international partners to join its implementation as soon as possible, in particular, the points on countering ecocide, nuclear and energy security," the statement said.

As noted in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia will have to compensate for all the consequences of its crime: both for people and for infrastructure and the environment.

"We also appeal to the countries of the Group of Seven and the EU to urgently consider the imposition of new far-reaching sanctions on the Russian Federation, in particular on the Russian missile industry and the nuclear industry," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the results of the NSDC meeting on the morning of June 6, as reported, the list of actions proposed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba in the context of the response, which "in particular, includes the convening by Ukraine of an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and bringing the issue of the Russian terrorist attack to the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors , as well as the involvement of the Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that on the night of June 6, the Russian Federation blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, which is located near the city of Nova Kakhovka in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region. "Dozens of settlements on both sides of the Dnipro are at risk of flooding," the agency said.

"We consider the blowing up of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam by the Russian Federation as a terrorist act against Ukrainian critical infrastructure, which aims to cause as many victims and destruction as possible. The terrorist attack on the Kakhovskaya HPP was previously hotly discussed at the level of the occupation forces in the Kherson region and propagandists on Russian television, which indicates his prior planning.

The undermining of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam is man-made and ecological terrorism, the biggest man-made disaster in Europe in recent decades, another manifestation of the genocide against Ukrainians. This is the Kremlin's response to countries calling for peace talks with the Russian Federation," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

"Due to a decrease in the water level in the Kakhovsky Reservoir, there may be a danger of an incident at another critical infrastructure facility occupied by Russia — the Zaporizhzhуа NPP," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

On June 6, 2023, around 3:00 a.m., the Russian military blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP in the Kherson region. Due to the explosion, the Kakhovskaya HPP was completely destroyed and cannot be restored.

There is an additional threat to the Zaporizhzhya NPP, but the situation is under control, Energoatom said.

Criminal proceedings on ecocide have been opened.

After a few hours, the water will reach a critical level. There is a threat of flooding up to 80 settlements. About 16,000 people were in the critical zone.

The Kherson Regional Government announced the evacuation of the population of some settlements, including some from Kherson. Evacuation has already begun.

Due to the detonation by the occupiers of the HPP, President Zelensky called an emergency meeting of the NSDC.
