According to Politico, the US State Department and the Pentagon are going in different directions on arming Ukraine, representing different perspectives and approaches to the issue. An administration source describes the disagreement as "moving at different speeds," with the State Department looking for opportunities and the Defense Department focusing on threats.

"People in the Defense Department would say they need to think about the pros and cons of every weapons decision, and that the responsibility falls to them," the source said.

The most recent example of such disagreement was the ATACMS missiles sent to Ukraine by US President Joe Biden after a long debate, where the Pentagon expressed resistance due to the limited availability of such missiles in US arsenals.

According to the publication, the US military is also seeking to avoid a possible "wider conflict with a nuclear state."

Outgoing US Chief of Staff Mark Milley stated: "One thing that has been and remains on my mind every day is managing escalation. The fact is that Russia is a nuclear power. And they have the ability to destroy humanity. There is no game to play here."

The Kyiv authorities are positive about the new head of the US Air Force, General Charles Brown, an unnamed adviser to the Ukrainian government said. He noted that Brown and his deputy, General David Alvin, were the first and consistent supporters of sending modern drones and F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
