Germany has decided to introduce temporary border controls on its land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, and continues to control the border with Austria to combat illegal migration and migrant smuggling. This was reported by the German Ministry of the Interior.
German Interior Minister Nancy Feser reported on such measures to the European Commission as part of the fight against migrant smuggling and the restriction of illegal migration.
It is planned to introduce internal border control on the land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland starting October 16 for 10 days, with the possibility of extending this period to two months. This means that the German Federal Police will use the same measures and controls on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland that are already in place on the border with Austria.
In recent weeks, measures have been taken to strengthen control and patrolling of the border areas, including joint patrols with the border police of Poland and the Czech Republic on their territory.
The Minister of the Interior emphasized that smugglers are becoming increasingly violent and unscrupulous. In connection with the terrible death of seven people illegally crossing the German-Austrian border, Germany is committed to taking all possible measures to stop this cruel business with human lives.
At the same time, it is important to effectively limit illegal migration and reduce the burden on municipalities.
The German Federal Police will now be able to respond flexibly to the changing situation and use a full range of measures, both stationary and mobile border police equipment. At the same time, it is important that the control does not affect the daily life of citizens, trade and the movement of passengers.
