Support for Ukraine may go beyond arms supplies, - French Chief of the General Staff

Western support for Ukraine may go beyond arms supplies, and this should be a signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement was made by Chief of the General Staff of the French Armed Forces Thierry Burkhard at a joint briefing with his Swedish counterpart Micael Bydén, BFMTV quoted.

Commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron's recent statements about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, the general said that the French leader's intention is to make it clear to Putin that the West is aware of what is happening in Ukraine.

"Putin has built his maneuver on the idea that the West will never go to Ukraine, but will limit itself to the supply of weapons. We have to show him that he cannot use this logic to go all the way, because this idea is not correct," Burkhard said.

The general emphasized that the war in Ukraine directly affects Europe, as the West is involved in its consequences.

"Therefore, Europeans must be able to take risks to ensure the security of Europe in the next decade," he said.

According to the general, Kyiv does not need support in terms of personnel, but NATO, which has just been joined by Sweden, must be ready for all unforeseen situations.

"The Ukrainian army is fighting very courageously, with great efficiency. The war will end when Russia stops the attack," he said.

General Bydén emphasized that a war is raging in Europe and the West should not allow this to become a normal phenomenon.

"Sweden is ready to take responsibility for deterrence and defense," he said.
